From mid-April until the beginning of October, this ride is a "hang or drop ride".  The rest of the year, the ride is a "no drop" ride.
 
The ride participants will be divided into groups, beginning with the fastest group, Group A.  No more than 10 riders per group.  Each group is ordered beginning with the person who has the fastest OP-21 finishing time to the person who has the longest overall OP-21 among the group members.  If individuals have equivalent overall times, then the rider with the fastest pulled lap is ordered in front.  The next set of fastest OP-21 riders make up the second group.
 
1Exceptions to assigning a rider within a group.  Occasionally, a rider may need a demotion to a slower group due to training needs (tapering, rest, etc.) or recovery.  An exception for pulling a lap occurs the first few weeks after a rider has been promoted to a faster group.
 
The structure requires that a rider pulls an entire lap1 (each lap is 2.4 miles long).  Once a rider begins to pull a lap, the rider must pull the entire lap.  All other group members must maintain a pace-line behind the puller.  Near the end of the lap (the marked transition area), the lead rider drifts to the rear end of the group and the next strongest rider pulls the next lap until reaching the transition area.  The process is repeated until the ninth (final) lap.  The rider pulling the final lap pulls to the finish-line.  The final time for the group is taken when the rider pulling the final lap crosses the finish-line.  If other riders sprint around this rider, their times are unofficial.
 
If a rider cannot "hang" within the group's pace-line, that rider must immediately pull out and allow all members behind move up the line.  After pulling out, the rider must fall back away from the group.  The dropped rider is permitted to join a slower ordered group if the opportunity arises.
 
If a slower group is lapped by a faster group, the slower group may draft on the back of the faster group; however, members of the slower group must not interfere with the order of the faster group.  The slower group members must maintain their order while remaining behind the faster group.
