By Ralph Frazier

September 7, 2009

Frazier Cycling's race team competed in two events during the last two weekends in August.  On Sunday, August 23, 2009, the team raced at Grant Park in Aaron's Cycling's Dog Days of Summer Criterium.  The following weekend, the team made the short trip to Dacula for Georgia Cycling Gran Prix Finale that included a road race on Saturday, August 29, and a circuit race on Sunday, August 30.

Sunday, August 23, 2009 - Dog Days of Summer Criterium (Grant Park) - Philip O'Donnell and David Goodman: "Stars of the Weekend"

Philip O'Donnell, 13, and David Goodman, 16, starred for our team as both stepped on the podium twice during the Dog Days of Summer Criterium at Grant Park on Sunday, August 23.  Philip was tops in the Juniors 10-14 classification by winning the overall Juniors race in a combined field that included all ages from 10 to 18.  Philip followed up his victory with a second place finish in the Men's Cat. 4 criterium.  David placed 3rd among the Juniors 15-18 classification and sprinted to a third place spot in the highly competitive Men's Cat 3 race.

Georgia Cycling Gran Prix Finale - Hodges "Star of the Weekend"; Joe Rosentel wins Men's Cat. 3 Title!

For the two day Georgia Cycling Gran Prix Finale, Frazier Cycling had 63 race entries, which was tops for all clubs entered in the event.  Out of the 63 race entries, our team managed to get on the podium 28 times -  an excellent showing by our team.

Andrew Hodges earned our "star of the weekend" by taking second in Saturday's Junior Road Race, eighth in the Men's Cat.4 road race, and first in Sunday's Juniors circuit race.

Nick Frazier, Greg Hanson, Andrew Macrae, Philip O'Donnell moved up to Men's Category 3 to add to our force of Hunter Lydick, Joe Rosentel, Mike Tindol, and Ethan Zehr.  The team's objective was to secure the Gran Prix's Men's Cat. 3 Overall Points Series Championship for Joe Rosentel.  Mission accomplished!

Saturday, August 29, 2009 - Harbins Hill Road Race

Our Men's Cat. 3 team kept Joe Rosentel near the front and even chased down a break that included an attentive teammate, David Goodman, to lock up Joe's an insurmountable points lead after Saturday's road race.  It was a very fast 44-mile race - everyone in the top 20 averaged more than 24 mph!  This was very impressive since the competitors had to ride six times up the long and steep hill at the finish-line.  When Joe topped the hill for the final time, he had ninth place and the points title.   Philip O'Donnell, 13, was our top finisher in this race, placing sixth - an awesome result for his first Cat. 3 race!  Mike Tindol was eighth.  David Goodman finished 14th. Greg Hanson was 19th and Ethan Zehr was 20th.  Andrew Macrae finished in 24th position.

Zoe Frazier proudly wore her "stars and stripes" jersey to overall victory in the Georgia Gran Prix Finale's Women's Cat. 1-4 road race.  She separated herself from competitors on the long and steep final climb to the finish more than two seconds ahead of second place, Stepanie Breslin, from Dayton, Ohio.   Our Kat Tindol finished in fifth place overall to take the top spot among the Cat 3/4 women.

Russell Tindol won the Juniors race followed by Andrew Hodges and Sam Tomaka, respectively.

Also, Andrew Hodges had our top finish in the 36.8-mile Men's Cat. 4 Under 35 race with his 8th place.  Fletcher Lydick had an outstanding performance by scampering past most of the men to twelfth place.  Gustavo Gonzalez reached the finish-line in 15th position.

In the Men's Cat. 4 35+, Wendell Scott passed several racers on the final climb of the 36.8-mile race as he crossed the line in fourth place, his best road race finish to date.

Results for 2009 Georgia Gran Prix Finale Flip Center Circuit Race

Sunday, August 30, 2009 - Flip Center Circuit Race

Joe Rosentel got on the podium in a thunderstorm shortened Men's Cat. 3 circuit race, the final race of the 2009 Georgia Cycling Gran Prix.  Joe crossed the line in second place less than two tenths of a second behind Maitland Jones, Atomic Race Team.  Officials shortened the 31.5-mile race to nine miles as the darkened sky was filled with lightning bolts and poured down torrential rain.  We had two other top 10 finishers in the race, David Goodman in eighth place and Philip O'Donnell in ninth.  The two were nearly dead even as the AMB Chip signals indicated the teammates were separated by a mere .001 of one second!
