A special thanks to Mark Eckrote who brought his daughter Kate and pitched in himself!

Frazier Cycling Adult Race Team

Second annual trip was a success with 3 days of riding in the GAP's doing a lot of FORCE work (i.e. forcing your legs to push you up a steep hill!) to build leg strength plus a solid amount of fellowship as we all enjoyed our suffering. Saturday's group (pictured) persevered through a 4 + hour 5-GAP ride on a beautiful day in the mountains. Friday and Sunday were the traditional 2+ hour 3-GAP rides we all know and love. The Hiker Hostel was the perfect host location again. Our turnout this year was roughly double of that last year. Look forward to lots of training over the Holiday season with all this new fitness we earned. If anyone has suggestion on how to improve the weekend for next year - let me know.

Did you ever talk to someone that was hit?  Ever see a car pass because they think they can?  Only to find out that there isn’t enough room?  Learn how to ride defensively.  Watch this animation and why you shouldn’t hug the furthest right most piece of asphalt.

http://commuteorlando.com/wordpress/animations/lane-control/

This should be shown and taught to every cyclist riding in traffic.
Don’t fool yourself if you think giving the car room in any lane that is 12 ft or less (90% are 12 feet – 14 feet is a Freeway lane) is safer.  Watch the animation and be sure to click on the how to ride safely after the bad example.

VERY IMPORTANT - ALL RIDERS AND DRIVERS NEED TO WATCH!'

RIDE FOR RICK

Message from our sponsor and member, Mike TIndol:

Please read the message below from Mark Helton which many of you know. Maybe someone that you didn't have the real pleasure in meeting was Ricky Spence. I was fortunate to be introduce to  Ricky through Mark. Ricky spent a good amount of time in the triathlon community and cycling. More important was his character and commitment to his family. Ricky is a true fighter and will always be one of my true heroes in fighting cancer. Please consider putting this on your calendar for next week. Kat and I will be there for the barbeque.

Hello All,

As my earlier e-mail noted we are having a ride for a good frined of mine's family -  Rick Spence - who has been fighting his third and final battle with brain tumors. Ricky has been a great friend ever since I moved back to GA and he and his wife Karen have always been great training partners and really family to me. They have two beautiful daughters and we want to do what ever we can to assist the family at this time of need. The ride is FREE and there will be BBQ for a donation following the ride. There are two routes (25 and 45 Miles) - both great rides and relativly flat as well!!! I will be driving SAG so you know you are in great hands should your bike have any issues. Come join us on March 3 and enjoy a great ride and some wonderful community spirit as Rick's family and friends gather.

Please call me if you have any questions and if you do plan to come let me know and I will be watching for you!

Keep Riding!

FRAZIER JUNIOR MULTISPORT by Coach Leanne Wakelin

2011 HIGHLIGHTS
FJM had its first season in 2011 and we did extremely well to say the least.  At the peak of the season we had 11 juniors competing in triathlons. We consistently podiumed which ruffled our competitors.  Of course our secret weapon is our exceptional biking skills, put together with a lot of determination and grit from the kids.   We had a fun year and each race was a different setting.

  • At the 'MY first bike triathlon we received 5 firsts and a 4th and 2 unplaced which made the other tri teams squirm to say the least.
  • At Dawsonville, a beginners race, we cleaned up the podium... unfortunately  Joey had a date with a rock and crashed.  Emily too slid out but won her age group and hobbled up to the podium with road rash down her leg.
  • At Peachtree City Joey and Jess were the representatives for the team and took 1st place in their respective age groups.

The kids all improved throughout the season and have tales of wins and disappointments.  Isabella gets the award for the Most Determined was the last in the pool after a one hour wait in  40F conditions- Borderline Hyperthermia!  Emily, Lauren, Sophie, Toby, Holly, Joey, Jess, Isabella and Alexandra,   I am very proud of you all!

2012 SEASON
The season starts again in March and we look to increase the size of the team this year. We will also be looking to add some swim sessions to the schedule.  We are sponsoring a 5km race at Burnette elementary on Feb 26th so if you are not racing come out and run it  I will have a tent there for FJM.  This year we have official tri suits and these are for kids or adults that want a Frazier tri suit.

The list of races we will be attending this year will be out shortly ... They include a rally foundation tri new this year and a race in Tennesse to add to our list. We will also throw in some 5 km runs this year to keep our running skills sharp.

Thanks to Kat Tindol for helping me out and she will continue her involvement this year.  Currently she is whipping them into shape at Bodyrich.

Any queries feel free to email me.

USA CYCLING 2012 UPDATES

USAC has made changes that effect our junior program.

1.  "Youth licenses for 6-9 year-olds: USA Cycling will begin selling annual licenses for the youth class in 2012. This class is defined as riders with an actual age of six through a racing age of nine. Additionally, a “youth race” is being defined as a race held on a closed course with a circuit of five kilometers or less  · Young juniors must use mass start legal bikes in all races, including time trials:"

2.  "Youth and junior riders in the 12 and under age categories will be restricted to mass start legal bikes in all races. These legal bikes cannot have aero bars. The wheels must have no covers and must have at least 16 spokes. These rules will apply to the 13-14 age group in 2013."

PARENTS:  THIS MEANS NO TIME TRIAL BIKES, AERO BARS OR WHEELS ALLOWED FOR 12 AND UNDER.  NEXT YEAR THE RULE APPLIES TO 14 AND UNDER!

Press Release by King College, Bristol TN:

September 28, 2011
Cyclists Place in Georgia Six Gap Criterium

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Among hundreds of adult and youth cyclists that participated in the inaugural Georgia Six Gap Criterium, two incoming King College cyclists placed in their respective races on Saturday, Sept. 24. Stephanie Cucaz and Amanda Komestat both finished in third place in races they participated in at the event.

Cucaz (Lawrenceville, Ga.) participated in both the Junior 15-18 category and the Women's Category 3/4 division. She took to the podium with a third place finish in the junior division race and finished fourth in the Women's CAT 3/4 with a 38:41.3 time on the half-mile (1km) closed-circuit road course. With her finish in the women's division, she clinched the first place podium in the Georgia Championship Races and gave her enough points to advance to CAT 2 status.

"This is a fantastic achievement for her as a young racer," said Head Coach Dan Kreiss. "It demonstrates the great training she received with Frazier Cycling as well as the determination she has to reach her potential."

Komestat (Williamson, Ga.) rebounded after missing much of the cycling season due to illness with a third place finish in the Women's CAT 3/4. Her performance helped her to an eighth place overall finish in the Georgia Championship Races series.

"King is very proud of the effort these women have put in and are excited about seeing them race for the Tornado when the season opens next month," said Kreiss.

The Georgia Six Gap Criterium is in its first year and is a two-day event taking place in Dahlonega, Ga. in coordination with Six Gap Century Weekend. A total of 11 races were help where hundreds of cyclists, both amateur and professional, from across the Peach State competed as a part of the final races of the Georgia Cycling Championship Series.

Cucaz, a freshman, and Komestat, a sophomore, will begin their first year with the King cycling program this season. The Tornado kick off their season with their first meet on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Urgent Message from the League of American Bicyclists

Subject: I Bike, I Vote: Support Continued Dedicated Funding for Bicycling and Walking

Take Action! (http://capwiz.com/lab/issues/alert/?alertid=53440771&queueid=[capwiz:queue_id])

It is time to Save Cycling

This year, around $700 million of Federal transportation funds, which in reality is less than 2 percent of total transportation dollars, will be spent on bicycling and walking. In 2012 that figure might be a big fat zero.
We expect that in the next few days, Senator Coburn (R-OK) will ask Congress to eliminate the federal Transportation Enhancements program – the primary funding source for the past 20 years for bike lanes, trails, bike racks on buses, bike education etc. This isn’t safe or smart; it’s not good for the economy or the environment; this is bad health policy and bad transportation policy. But they are going to try because they don’t think bicycling matters.
Even though bicycling projects create more jobs per dollar than highway-only projects and cutting enhancements won’t impact the deficit – the money just won’t be spent on bicycling – some Members of Congress want to force us backwards to a 1950s highway-only mindset: as if oil embargoes, congestion, smog, the obesity epidemic and climate change never happened.
Now is the time to Save Cycling, so we are asking you to contact your Senators and urge them to support continued funding for biking and walking. Don’t let them take away this vital investment program for smart, sustainable, safe transportation choices.
Please Take Action today.
Thank You.

Oak Ridge Velo Classic Race Report by Srin Gummadi

Oak Ridge Velo Classic is a well run but small race. The Junior 10-14 field consisted of about 10-11 riders. The main competition was Trace Bikes (3 riders) plus one 14 year old from Chattanooga (Chase Martin - Scenic City Velo/Krystal) who only attended the RR.

The road race had two category 5 climbs (per MapMyRide). It is a fast technical course with a number of sweeping high speed turns and included some tough climbs.

With a neutral start, the group rode to the start of the race together. The first categorized climb was immediately at the start of the race. There was a small attack and the everyone accelerated and chased. Group was together except for one lone rider who got dropped. For the next few miles the group went hard but not excessively. They dropped one of Arvin's teammates (another Parker).

Luckily, for the other Parker, a train arrived at a level crossing and he caught up when the pack got stopped. The rest of the group hydrated and then the race restarted after the train passed. At the second climb, Chase Martin attacked, Teja was fourth wheel and quickly bridged up to Chase. Parker and Blake climbed strongly and were soon 3rd and 4th going up the climb and had dropped everyone else. Adi got dropped by Arvin but he was within sight. On the descent, we couldn't see Chase and Teja. Adi bridged up to Arvin and Peter (Arvin's third teammate). With Parker and Blake still visible in the distance, Adi sat on their wheels. Peter attacked on a short climb and got away.

Teja didn't know where the finish line was located and got beat to the regular looking tent with no signage (or cones). Parker and Blake finished strong for third and fourth (I didn't see their finish since we were trailing Arvin and Adi in the car). Adi and Arvin sprinted to a couple of cones. Turned out it was a feed station. Then they sprinted again at the actual finish. Adi finished 6th and Arvin 7th. It was a good race with Frazier Cycling taking 2nd-4th and 6th.

The TT was listed at 10 miles but ended up being 7.7 miles. It was an out and back course. Chase left for a triathlon back in Chattanooga so it was Frazier Cycling versus Trace Bikes with a couple of others in the mix. Not much to report except that Adi almost caught Arvin on the way back after starting 1 minute back and Adi had almost missed his start time due to an upset stomach (!). Teja was first, Adi 2nd, Parker 4th, and Blake 6th. Arvin made the podium in 3rd and his teammate Peter was 5th. Positions 3-6 were all within one minute.

The final race was the following morning in historic downtown Oak Ridge. Prior to the race, the omnium had Teja in 1st, Parker in 2nd, Adi in 3rd, and Blake tied for 4th with Arvin and Peter. The goal of the race was to get Blake to finish ahead of Arvin and Peter so that Frazier Cycling swept the first four positions in the omnium.

The strategy was for Teja to protect Blake and use Parker and Adi to attack and tire out the competition. Right from the gun, Adi and Parker took off. Arvin was heard to say something like "Oh no". Arvin's teammate Parker chased them down near the end of the first lap. On the second lap, the seven of them rode around easily and allowed Parker (Trace Bikes) to take the tire prime. On the next lap, Frazier Cycling's Parker attacked hard on the backside and Trace Bikes' Peter chased him down with rest of the pack in tow (Parker and Peter got a prime each). By now, there was only the four Frazier Cycling and two Trace Bikes (Arvin and Peter) left in the lead pack.

When Peter (Trace Bikes) caught Parker (Frazier), Arvin decided to attack almost immediately. Peter was dropped as all four of the Frazier riders caught Arvin. Now, it was up to the four to ensure that Arvin didn't finish ahead of Blake. Arvin had helped them by attacking and dropping his last teammate before he could recover.

Teja went to the front and kept the pace high with Parker and Blake in tow. Adi snuck in between Blake and Arvin. At an opportune moment, Adi started soft pedaling and created a gap. Arvin was forced to accelerate to catch Blake's wheel again. Adi did it a second time and Arvin couldn't catch up. On the last hill, there was already a significant gap between the Teja/Parker/Blake and Arvin. The three crossed the line before Arvin and Adi came around the last turn. Adi accelerated away to get fourth place for a successful sweep of the first four positions in the crit and omnium.

The two keys were Parker's powerful (and timely) attack which forced Trace Bikes to chase hard and the ability of the team to protect Blake from expending too much energy by attacking or chasing attacks.

I heard at Georgia Cycling Gran Prix that it would be difficult for us to beat Anthony with Blake (I rate Arvin near Anthony in the 11 year olds). Clearly, we can, if the racers follow the plan as these four did this past Sunday. They didn't chase their teammates, didn't attack pointlessly, and rode smartly and efficiently. They controlled the race as a team. Having Teja in the race helped greatly but his job could have been done by using a couple of other riders taking turns at the front over the last two laps.

This is a good omnium for the younger juniors to attend. It is well organized, properly marshaled, and challenging. The competition was not skilled enough to challenge Teja's fitness (except the one racer who rode one race and left) but it is plenty of competition for the next tier of racers in Frazier Cycling (Adi, Parker, Blake, Toby, Kate, ....). With Coach Duco growing the Trace Bikes team, next year will be interesting. The results were quickly provided but there was no podium ceremony for any of the races that we saw. The kids just went to the organizer and said which medals they were supposed to receive.

August 21 - Grant Park Crit
http://www.grantparkcriterium.com/modules/content/index.php?id=1. This is the last official race for the 2011 Junior race season and is a required race for the Jr Race Team. There is a beginners race for women and one for men - you do not need a USAC race license. If you want to start racing this is the best place to do this.

August 27, 28 - River Gorge Omnium, Chattanooga.
This is an optional race for juniors who race category. You are responsible for handling all of your race registration details as Paula Wexler does not cover this race. http://www.sceniccityvelo.com/content.php?id=rivergorge.

September 3 - Frazier Cycling's Summer Century, Braselton
Juniors need permission to participate. Open to all Frazier Cycling Members. This is a challenging and hilly course. For ride info http://fraziercycling.com/partner_events.htm. Call us for more details.

September 10 - 9/11 Wounded Warrior Remembrance Ride, Duluth to Lake Lanier.
Each fall Frazier Cycling supports a local charity ride. This 22 mile ride is organized by a member of the Duluth Police Department. We want a strong showing to support the cause and our local community and officers. It is $35 each for a group of 10 or more if registered by August 10. Contact us if you can ride asap so we can make the deadline. http://operationonevoice.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/warrior_regform.pdf

Camp Frazier was a huge success!  We had 41 juniors and 11 parents and coaches.  King College was a fantastic host. Thanks to all the coaches and staff. We did a time trial, crit, road race, endurance ride, bumping skills, race tactics, plyometrics, skills training, hill workouts, mountain rides and had time for a lot of fun.  Clinics on bike fitting, sports imagery, personal motivation, developing a cycling team were included.

Check out this video (thank to Barbara Greene): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_YjkaI75II.

There will be a presentaton on using mathematics to model the unique Dick Lane Velodrome and optimize pursuit performance by W. Lee Childers PhD & Timothy P. Gallagher

Thursday, July 21, 2011
7:00 pm.
Auditorium, School of Applied Physiology, Georgia Institute of Technology
555 14th Street, NW
Atlanta, GA 30318

The Dick Lane Velodrome is unique in several ways, 1) it is 1/5 mile, 2) it has tight corners, 3) it has a hill, and 4) it has bumps, lots and lots of bumps. These unique features affect an athlete's pursuit performance. The individual pursuit is a time trial event in which the athlete tries to achieve the lowest time to go a fixed distance (normally 4km). Factors affecting performance for this event include, the cyclist's ability to produce power, the aerodynamic drag of the bicycle/rider, rolling resistance between the bike and the track, the pacing strategy selected by the athlete and the geometry of the velodrome. This presentation will discuss a mathematical model that can predict performance by accounting for these factors.

The presentation will last about 50 minutes and begin with a review of forces acting on the cyclist related to aerodynamics and rolling resistance. There will be a discussion on the effect of different aerodynamic improvements on performance. This will be followed by an introduction to how the cyclist uses different physiological systems to produce power on the bicycle and how those systems can be used as a pacing strategy for a pursuit. The presentation will continue with the effect of the geometry of the Dick Lane Velodrome. Finally, this information will be used to calculate pursuit performance using a forward integrated mathematical model (Childers et. al., 2011) and answer the questions; 1) what is the effect of the tight corners, 2) the hill, and 3) the track surface? What can be done to improve performance at this velodrome and what to expect at different velodromes?

Georgia Games: Georgia State Road Race Championships

Today, we had some very good results in the junior road races. Adi GUmmadi is the men 10-12 yr old state champ, Kate Eckrote is the women 10-12 yr old state champ and ALex Wexler is the men 13-14 yr old state champ.  Also, David Goodman finished in third place in the Men's Pro-1-2 field. Stephanie Cucaz continues as our hottest racer by winning the Women's Cat 1-2-3 with a dominant sprint break from the field in the final 350 meters of their 71-mile race. She easily won and was able to relax and sit up as she crossed the finish-line.

UPDATE FROM BELGIUM:  Andrew Hodges and David Goodman have been invited to race with a team in Belgium. They left Wednesday and will return in 2 weeks. Carolyn Goodman and Lisa Hodges will be providing photos and updates.

The team is Above Category and they take kids a couple of times a year to race in Belgium purely to help develop them and provide the experience. David and Hodges were picked because they were at Sea Otter in CA earlier this year and the Above Category Coach Frank Eeckman saw them.

Saturday and Sunday they will race in a local race. In this race they will wear their Frazier Kits and race as Frazier team members. They will train during the week and then next Friday/Sat/Sun compete as the Above Category Team in a 17-18 year old Stage Race.

The stage race they will be doing June 11 - 13 is the Ster der Vlaamse Adrennen, It goes through Michelbeke, Erwetegem adn Opbarkel; 3 Road Races and a Time Trial. Today they went for a ride to loosen up after the long flight and 'climbed the legendary Coppenberg'.

Tour of Atlanta Johns Creek Criterium is May 28th.  We want to thank GA Cup for having a juniors field and scoring the juniors separately.  Also we appreciate the junior entry fee of $5.00!  Thanks, James!  We want to support promoters who hold junior-friendly races and encourage them to continue.  A big turn-out is how we can best say thanks!

Sunday was the MAC Century. The Century raises money for Dawsonville High School so it was a good opportunity to do some community service and raise a few dollars to support our trip to Junior Nationals. The juniors manned the 5 support stations for the event and still got their Sunday miles in by riding parts of the course including to the summit of Burnt Mountain (after making it up the summit, one of our Honors juniors commented,” Why do people do this?”).

This was a logistical effort of "epic" magnitude! A very special thanks to Carolyn Goodman for coordinating this activity. No one else could have pulled this off! And thanks to the parents who drove and rode and all the juniors who spent the day in the sun to do support. This was a unique experience for the juniors to see all that is involved in providing support. It was a great team effort and the organizers mentioned several times what a great job everyone did.

Thanks to:
Russell Tindol, Wagner Macrae, Ben Rothschild, Alexander Dijkema, Teja Gummadi, James Todd, David Goodman, Zoe Frazier, Dominique Shore, Andrew Hodegs, Stephanie Cucaz, JJ Cucaz, Abigail Aldridge, Fletcher Lydick, Alex Wexler, Blake Wilson, Adi Gummadi, Parker Haney, Jeff Aldridge, Johnny Cucaz, Steve Shore, Karen Rothschild, Andy Lydick, David Haney, Steve Wilson, Kristi Wilson.

Re: Chattanooga Ride last week:

Scott Luikart, remote coaching client from Ohio who came for the ride, "I was so impressed with the juniors as riders and especially as nice young people that care for and work together as a team".

This is what our program is about - not the 142 miles (very hill) but the working together as a team to help each other make the ride.

FRAZIER JUNIOR MULTISPORT:  Coach Leanne Wakelin and her daughter, Holly, a member of our Junior Multisport team, ran our booth at the Suwanee Bunny Run 5K on Saturday.  Despite a little rain, the event went well.  We are trying to get out into the community to give our programs more exposure.

ATHENS TWILIGHT:   Thanks to Gene Dixon, Athens race promoter, for his support for juniors.  To facilitate scoring of the junior fields he is supplying timing chips for all juniors at no charge.  We will be handing out the chips when you get your bib and you must return the chips at rollout.  (For those who have not experienced racing with timing chips - these are about the size of a quarter and are mounted to the racer's bike during the race.   As the bike crosses the finish line the time is recorded.  There is an additional cost to rent the chips at the race unless you have purchased one.)

FLETCHER LYDICK:  Fletcher has been out all season from a skiing injury.  He is soon to be back but it has been a long hard winter for him. Here he is training on one foot.

April 22, 2011

Practice as scheduled for Easter Sunday.  Let us know if you plan to attend either practice (Duluth or Alpharetta) on Sunday.

We had a great day at Sunny King Criterium. The team raced well in the juniors fields as well as the categories. It was a record 87 degrees and for once it did not rain!  Once again, Mike Poe and Curtis Cupp put on a great event for juniors.  This race definitely makes our top 10 Junior Friendly Race list along with Tour de Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa AL.

Our new kits are in and they look sharp.  Thanks to Veloce Speedwear.  Contact us if you need to pick up your order and we can arrange to bring it to your next ride/practice.  We will bring them to Alpharetta and Duluth practices today. If you did not order one, we have jerseys available for purchase.

April 8, 2011

The Spring Century was last Saturday.  Beautiful weather.  Thanks to the support crew and congratulations to the riders.  That is a very hilly course and there was a heavy head wind.  We received emails from riders and parents thanking Mike Tindol and Wendell Scott for helping to pull the B group and Jack Wilkinson and Chris Porras for leading the group.

The 2011 Kits are finally here!  If you did not order one we have several extras that you can purchase.

Congratulations to Leanne Wakelin, Head Coach, Frazier Junior Multisport. Leanne has qualified as a member of the New Zealand team to go to the ITU World Championship race in Beijing in September this year.

The 2011 race season is in full swing.  The season opener as in years past was the Tundra Time Trial.  Frazier Cycling was well represented - we had 61 racers from FC Partners, FC Juniors Atlanta and FC Juniors Fairhope.  We did the Hincapie Greenville Spring Training Series earlier this month - great competition and lots of juniors and women.  We made the trek over to Tuscaloosa AL to race in the Tour de Tuscaloosa last weekend.

We have been attending the Tour de Tuscaloosa since 2008.  It is a junior-friendly race that is very well run by Velo City Bike Shop and it is one of our favorite races.  We received this note from Skip Sneed, one of the race promoters:

"Having your organization as a major part of our event is a huge plus for everyone involved. And the quality of racing and people that you always bring with you is terrific. I just can't say enough about how much we appreciate you all being here!  Please know that it is deeply appreciated, and your attendance here is highly valued! People in our community look forward to seeing you every year."

Not all races are as welcoming to juniors. The Roswell Criterium, May 1, has excluded juniors this year. The race director does not feel that this race is a good fit for juniors. It is a step backwards in our efforts to grow the sport.  But on the other hand, both local race promoters, Georgia Cup and Swaggart, are supporting juniors in their races this year!

FYI:  Excellent race photos are on www.candisnaps.com/sports/cycling.  Thanks to Candice Todd.
